THIS WEEK: The Washington State Tennis team (7-8, 0-4 Pac-12) concludes its 2023 home schedule by hosting No. 41 Oregon as part of Senior Day, Friday, March 31, at 11:40 at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Free sandwiches will be provided for fans in attendance.
SENIOR DAY: Prior to Friday’s match against Oregon, the Cougars will honor senior Yang Lee who will be competing at home for the final time. Lee has collect 38 singles wins and 75 doubles victories during her career, the latter tied for eighth-most in program history. A brief ceremony will be held at 11:40 a.m. in Hollingbery Fieldhouse to recognize her contributions to Washington State University and Cougar Tennis.
SCOUTING OREGON: The Ducks bring a No. 41 national ranking into the match, along with a 10-4 record, 3-1 in Pac-12 play. Oregon has won four of their last five matches, including a 4-2 victory over No. 50 Utah in its most recent outing. Oregon leads the all-time series, 39-26, although the Cougars posted a 4-3 victory in the last meeting in Pullman (2021).
DOUBLES DUO EARNS NATIONAL RANKING: The doubles pair of freshman Eva Alvarez Sande and sophomore Elyse Tse how found great success since teaming together midway through the season. The pair has posted a 7-0 record this year, going 2-0 at No. 1 and 5-0 at No. 2. After defeating the nation’s 11th-ranked team from Arizona State in their last match, the Cougar duo earned a No. 38 national ranking in the most recent ranking.
NEXT UP: Washington State begins a five-match road swing to conclude the regular season by visiting Colorado, Friday., April 12 at Noon PT.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2022-23 season the Cougars will have three new players to accompany the six returners. The returning roster consists of fifth-year senior Yang Lee, junior Fifa Kumhom and sophomores Hania Abouelsaad, Stefaniia Mikhailova, Maxine Murphy and Elyse Tse. Joining the Cougar tennis program this year are freshmen Eva Alvarez Sande, Yura Nakagawa and Tiffany Phout.
COACH RAQUEL ATAWO: Raquel Atawo is in her second season as head coach of the Cougars after being named to the position July 2, 2021. In Atawo’s first year leading Washington State Tennis, the Cougars showed great improvement throughout the season, finishing with a, 8-15 record, but posted back-to-back wins late in the season over nationally-ranked…
