Cougars Fall at Nebraska, 5-2


LINCOLN, Neb.  – Washington State Tennis came away with a pair of singles victories but it was not enough as host Nebraska posted a 5-2 victory over the Cougars Friday afternoon at the Dillon Tennis Center.
 
Nebraska (6-1) captured the opening doubles by claiming the first two matches off court. At No. 3, the Husker duo of Lucy Loy and Ana Carmen Zamburek posted a 6-0 win over Tiffany Phout and Stefaniia Mikhailova while the doubles point was clinched at No. 1 as Sam Alicea and Raphaella Lacasse rallied from 2-3 down to defeated Maxine Murphy and Yura Nakagawa, 6-3. The match on court 2 was stopped with WSU’s (4-4) Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse serving at match point, up 5-4, 40-30 against Nebraska’s Isabel Adrover Gallego and Anfisa Danilchenko.
 
In singles play, Nebraska made it 2-0 as Lacasse defeated Hania Abouelsaad 6-0, 6-2 before Murphy cut that lead in half with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1. Murphy, ranked No. 111 nationally, improved to 13-10 on the season.
 
At No. 2, Adrover Gallego needed a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Alvarez Sande before Tse rallied from a set down to defeat Danilchenko 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, cutting the Nebraska lead to 3-2. The Cornhuskers clinched the match at No. 6 when Loy came away with a hard-fought, 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Mikhailova. With the match decided, the match at No. 3 was completed with Alicea rallying for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Nakagawa.
 
WSU continues its stay in Lincoln when it faces Minnesota Saturday morning at the Dillon Tennis Center. Match time is set for 9 a.m. PT.
