Cornut-Chauvinc, Connel Lead Seminoles In Fall Competitions

TALLAHASSEE – Florida State junior Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc advanced to the semifinals at the ITA Fall Championships and sophomore Jamie Connel won the Bedford Cup in action this weekend.

Cornut-Chauvinc won three matches at the ITA Fall Championships in San Diego and advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament. The Lyon, France, native opened the tournament with consecutive straight-sets victories, winning 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the second round. He then won a three-set match 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 over Ohio State’s JJ Tracy, the No. 8-ranked player in the nation, in the quarterfinals before falling in three sets to No. 3 seed Nishesh Basavareddy from Stanford.

Cornut-Chauvinc has produced phenomenal results all fall, beating six ranked opponents on his way to a 13-3 record in singles with all three losses coming to the eventual champions of each tournament. His victory over Tracy was his sixth win over a ranked opponent and second over an opponent ranked in the top-10 this fall.

“Antoine showed this week why he is one of the best players in the country,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “He came from behind twice at nationals and almost did it a third time and had 13 wins this fall in singles.”

Connel won the Bedford Cup with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Florida Atlantic’s Kevin Huempfner in the final, completing a run through the bracket in which he only dropped one set in four matches. Connel opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 victory and followed that with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the quarterfinal round. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native earned a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win in the semifinal to advance to the championship match. He also teamed with redshirt sophomore John Bernard to win the doubles consolation bracket.

“I’m really pleased with Jamie winning the Bedford Cup,” Hultquist said. “He continues to improve this fall with an 11-2 record including several ranked wins. He continues to work on improving all aspects of his game.”

Redshirt sophomore Maks Silagy and sophomore Alex Bulte earned an 8-6 victory in the quarterfinal round of doubles before falling in the semifinal round of the main doubles bracket. Bulte also advanced to the quarterfinal round in singles, earning a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win in the first round and a 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 victory in the round of 16. Silagy earned two singles wins, taking a 6-4, 6-1 decision in the round of 32 and a 7-6, 6-7, 10-4 win in the compass draw.
