Comeback Falls Short for Men’s Tennis Against No. 25 Baylor


TEMPE – In the third match of the 2024 men’s tennis season, the Sun Devils (2-1) rallied from a 3-1 deficit against No. 25 Baylor (3-0). The Bears won the final singles match of the day to defeat ASU 4-3 on Thursday at Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. 

Head Coach Matt Hill praised his team’s leaders, “We have a lot of older seniors who are helping the younger guys find their way in college tennis.”

ASU opened their match against Baylor by earning the doubles point with victories on courts two and three to take a 1-0 match lead ahead of singles play. 

Baylor won the first three singles points to take a 3-1 lead. Zsombor Velcz recorded the first victory on court two, winning 6-4, 6-1. Devin Bradenhort won his court three match 6-2, 6-4. Miladinovic tallied Baylor’s third point, winning 6-2, 6-2 on court five.

The Sun Devils responded by winning the next two singles points to tie the match 3-3. Murphy Cassone won his match 6-2, 6-4 on court one to spark the Sun Devils’ comeback. Roi Ginat evened the match, winning 6-2, 6-3. In the decisive final match on court four, Jacob Bullard rallied and won the second set tie-break to force a third set. Oskar Brostrom won the final set and match 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.

The Sun Devils will travel to Starkville, Mississippi to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. ASU will play No. 20 Florida State on Saturday, January 27 in their first match and either No. 17 Mississippi State or Virginia Commonwealth in their second match on Sunday, January 28.
