Colton Smith and Jay Friend Selected for NCAA Singles Championships


TUCSON, Ariz. – Colton Smith and Jay Friend of Arizona Men’s Tennis have been selected for the NCAA Singles Championship it was announced Monday afternoon. 

Of 64 total singles players, #5 Smith was selected as the third seed and #15 Friend as the fifth seed. Alongside the Wildcats in the top eight seeds is #30 Sebastian Gorzny [1] (Texas), #2 Michael Zheng [2] (Columbia), #56 Carl Emil Overbeck [4] (Cal), #39 Lui Maxted [6] (TCU), #3 Oliver Tarvet [7] (San Diego) and #71 Aidan Kim [8] (Ohio State). 

Smith and Friend both qualified for the championship back in September at the ITA All-American Championship. The Wildcats punched their tickets by making to through to the consolation final at the tournament. 

This will be Smith’s third appearance at the championships in his four years as a Wildcat. Last May, the senior made a historic run to the semi-final, in which he fell to Columbia’s Zheng. 

This will be Friend’s second appearance at the championships as a junior, his first being last May where he fell in the first round to Cannon Kingsley of Ohio State. 

The championships will be hosted by Baylor and held at Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas from Tuesday, Nov. 19 to Sunday, Nov. 24.
