Colorado Finishes Up Weekend Tournaments

FORT COLLINS, Colo./CARY N.C. – The Colorado Buffaloes Tennis team finished at not one, but two tournaments early this afternoon with mixed results going 4-10 combined the last two days of competition.

For the last time this fall the Buffs were split between two different tournaments, with Aya El Sayed competing at the ITA All-American Championships and Anya Nelson, Willow Gretsch, and Ellen Puzak at the Colorado State Invite.

After losing her first pre-qualifying match yesterday to North Carolina freshman Theadora Rabman, El Sayed was not going to advance, but was given a second match on day two against a Tar Heel rival Luliia Bryzgalova, a senior from Duke. Unlike the first match, El Sayed came out fast dominating the first set 6-2 to take command early. Although the second set wasn’t as smooth the result was the same, finishing the weekend with a 6-4 match clinching win leaving the tournament one and one.

Back in the box state action has been full speed ahead the last two day at CSU. Much like the first day of play in doubles Nelson and Puzak in their final two matches split doubles winning the first 6-1 against Monica Guarin and Mikayala Mckenzie from Metro State to finish the second day. Early in day three they would fall to Wyoming’s Nikol Dobrilova and Adel Ismagulova 6-3. For Gretsch, she only had one doubles match remaining with Iowa State partner Isabella Dunlap. Unfortunately, the lack of chemistry continued to be a fatal fall ultimately losing to South Dakota’s Selena Bird and Hitakamya Narwal Singh 6-2.

Nelson and Puzak both saw improvements early in day two each winning their first singles match although in different ways. Nelson quickly moved through her match winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 over Kambra Roles from Metro State. On the flip side Puzak had to gut out a win in a 10-point third set tiebreaker against Utah State’s Magdalena Nunez Pureco. When all was said and done, she ended on top with a 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 win early in the day. For both those would be the final singles wins of the weekend with both losing their final two matches. Gretsch after attaining her first win as a Buff on day one would fail to add to win column the final two days.
