Clemson, Louisville Advance at ACC Women's Tennis Championship


CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson and Louisville earned wins on Wednesday in their first-round matches of the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championship in Cary, North Carolina.
 
No. 12 Clemson moves on to play No. 5 Miami on Thursday while No. 12 Louisville will face No. 6 Florida State. First serve between the Tigers and Hurricanes is set for 10 a.m. and the Cardinals and Seminoles will battle at 12:30 p.m.
 
No. 12 Clemson 4, No. 13 Virginia Tech 3
It came down to the final match on Court 3 between the Tigers and Hokies, with Jenna Thompson clinching the match for Clemson for the second year in a row with her three-set, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-4, victory over Virginia Tech’s Semra Aksu.
 
The Hokies took the doubles point with two 6-2 victories on Courts One and Two from Katie Andreini/Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng/Ozlem Uslu before Clemson fought back to take a 2-1 lead with two singles wins on Courts One and Four from Eleni Louka and No. 113 Daniella Medvedeva, respectively. The score went back and forth from there with Andreini knotting the score at 2-2 before another win apiece resulted in a 3-3 tie. Thompson and Aksu battled to a 4-4 tie before Thompson pulled away for a 6-4 third-set win and the match.
 
 
No. 14 Louisville 4, No. 11 Boston College 3
Wednesday’s second first-round match brought the drama, with its result coming down to the final singles match on Court 5 where Louisville’s Cici Xin clinched the match with a three-set, come-from-behind 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win.
 
The Cardinals jumped ahead after winning the doubles point after the duo of Sasha Gorchanyuk and Maria Campos earned a 6-1 win on Court Three, followed by a 6-3 win by Jamilah Snells/Cici Xin on Court 2.
 
Natalie Eordekian tied it up for Boston College with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on Court Six before No. 122 Andrea Di Palma and Tyra Richardson pushed Louisville’s lead to 3-1. Sophia Edwards and Laura Lopez evened the score for the Eagles to 3-3 before Xin’s match-clinching thriller on Court Five.
 
Second-round action will be held Thursday, starting at 10 a.m. with No. 8 Notre Dame versus No. 9 Wake Forest and No. 5 Miami playing No. 12 Clemson. At 12:30 p.m., No. 7 Georgia Tech takes on No. 10 Syracuse and No. 6 Florida State faces off with No. 14 Louisville.
