CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 13 seed Clemson and No. 11 seed Virginia Tech advanced to the second round of the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championship on Wednesday at the Cary Tennis Park.
Clemson moves on to face No. 5 seed Georgia Tech on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., while Virginia Tech is set to face No. 6 seed Miami at 6 p.m.
The Tigers upset No. 12 seedBoston College, 4-3, in a match that came down to Daniella Medvedeva’s heroics on Court 3.
Boston College claimed the doubles point as all three courts were able to finish. Natalie Eordekian and Tola Glowacka gave the Eagles the edge with a 6-4 win over Clemson’s Sophia Hatton and Alina Tsyurpalevych on Court 3. BC’s No. 1 duo of Marice Aguiar and Stephanie Sanchez battled for a 7-6 (6) tiebreaker win over the Tigers’ Jenna Thompson and Eleni Louka to clinch the 1-0 advantage. On Court 2, Seren Agar and Nada Dimovska recorded a 6-4 victory over Clemson’s Cristina Mayorova and Leigh Van Zyl.
From there, the score went back and forth until the end as the Eagles’ Agar claimed a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win on Court 6 over Van Zyl to give Boston College a 2-0 lead before Clemson’s Louka defeated Aguiar in straight sets on Court 1, 6-2, 6-4, to cut the lead to 2-1.
Thompson evened the score for Clemson at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sanchez on Court 5 before Eordekian gave Boston College the lead right back with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Mayorova at the No. 2 singles spot. Clemson wasn’t done yet as Hatton gave the Tigers and Medvedeva the momentum they needed to finish.
On Court 3, Medvedeva and BC’s Mahajan were in a battle as Medvedeva rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to clinch the match for the Tigers 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
Louisville got out to a 2-0 over Virginia Tech start thanks to a pair of doubles wins on Courts 1 and 2. The Cardinals’ Allie Gretkowski and Lika Peresypkina defeated VT’s Katie Andreini and Dariya Radulova, 6-3, at the top spot to give UL’s Jamilah Snells and Berta Miret the momentum to clinch the doubles point with a 7-6 (6-4) tiebreaker win over the Hokies’ Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng on Court 2.
Peresypkina made quick work of VT’s Andreini on Court 2 in singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win to extend Louisville’s lead to 2-0, only to see the Hokies cut that lead in half with Radulova’s 6-3, 6-1 win over Miret on Court 5.
