Chang Named Pac-12 Player Of The Week

California men’s tennis junior Alex Chang was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

The accolade is the first for the Golden Bears this season.

The Berkeley native was a big factor in the Bears’ impressive Pac-12-opening sweep of No. 52 Oregon and No. 74 Washington last weekend. The 65th-ranked pair of Chang and Mikey Wright upset two other duos to clinch both doubles points. Additionally, with his doubles wins and singles victory over the last two matches, Chang (17-7) leads Cal in doubles wins and is tied for the lead in singles wins at 16-8.

In Saturday’s 4-1 triumph over the Ducks, Chang and Wright defeated the 33rd-ranked Quinn Vandecasteele and Matthew Burton, 6-4, on court one to give Cal the early lead. He later bested David Cierny, 6-1, 6-1, at court-two singles, as the Bears captured their Pac-12 opener.

Against the Huskies on Sunday, Chang and Wright topped the 17th-ranked Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn, 6-3, on court one of the eventual 4-1 conquest.

Cal is 2-0 in the Pac-12 and 6-6 overall.

The Bears briefly return to nonconference action when they take on San Francisco on Wednesday at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco.
