TULSA, Okla. – Carl Emil Overbeck reached the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships for the first time when the California men’s tennis junior won twice in qualifying singles Tuesday at the University of Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The main draw starts Wednesday, with the Golden Bear’s opponent and match time yet to be announced.
Overbeck, a product of Copenhagen, Denmark, didn’t get past qualifying singles in either of the past two seasons at the ITA All-American Championships. But the third time proved to be the charm.
In Tuesday morning’s round of 64 in qualifying singles, Overbeck moved past Baylor’s 72nd-ranked Oskar Brostrom Poulsen when the latter – trailing 7-5, 2-1 – retired with an injury. In the afternoon round of 32, Overbeck defeated Mississippi State’s Benito Sanchez Martinez, 6-3, 6-2, to advance.
Along with winning a title in a national tournament, Overbeck and the rest of the 64-player field in the main draw are hoping to at least reach the semifinals in Tulsa, since All-American singles semifinalists qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships, slated for Nov. 1-5 in San Diego.
The All-American ends Sunday.
