Cardinals Complete Day One at Martha Thorn Invitational


MORGANTOWN, W.V – The University of Louisville women’s tennis team completed the first day of competition at the Martha Thorn Invitational hosted by West Virginia University. 
 
The Cards won 3-0 against JMU and Penn State in doubles. Louisville duo Rhea Verma and Maria Campos won No. 1 doubles 6-3 against Hope Moulin and Alexandra Prudente of JMU. CiCi Xin and Andrea Di Palma won No. 2 doubles 7-5 against Ioana Gheorghita and Karly Friedland of Penn State. Tyra Richardson and Sasha Gorchanyuk won No. 3 doubles 6-2 against Prudente of JMU and Alina Lebedeva of Penn State, a pair created to maximize participation in the tournament. 
 
In the only singles action of the day, UofL defeated Duquesne 5-1. Verma, playing No. 1 singles, beat Margot Pessy 6-0, 6-4. Xin won No. 2 singles against Anastasiia Kotsyuba 6-2, 6-1. Playing at No. 3 singles, Campos beat Daniela Latoni 6-3, 6-2. Gorchanyuk defeated Ellen Shanahan 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Richardson won at No. 5 singles beating Natasha Novak 6-1, 6-1. Arielle Nealy retired in her No. 6 singles match against Ana Utrilla Benito. 
 
The Cardinals are back in action Saturday at 12 p.m. ET. UofL is tentatively scheduled to play doubles versus Duquesne.
