Katja Wiersholm won in straight sets on Sunday to clinch Cal’s victory over the Ducks.
EUGENE, Ore. – The 37th-ranked California women’s tennis team defeated No. 43 Oregon, 6-1, on Sunday at the Student Tennis Center, with Katja Wiersholm clinching the victory and Jessica Alsola capturing her 15th consecutive singles win.
Cal’s record is now 8-7 (5-2 Pac-12). The Ducks are 11-7 (4-4).
The Golden Bears trailed 1-0 after doubles. First, seniors Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov fell to the Ducks’ Jo-Yee Chan and Ares Teixido Garcia, 6-0, on court two. Oregon clinched the point when Uxia Martinez Moral and Sophie Luescher upset Cal’s fourth-ranked Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm, 6-2, on court one.
The Bears responded in a big way in singles. They won five of six first sets, starting with Berta Passola Folch blanking Madisen Olsen, 6-0, 6-0. Alsola, ranked 43rd, quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Luescher, and then Giavara defeated Ares Teixido Garcia 6-1, 6-4, to give Cal a 3-0 lead. Wiersholm posted another straight-set result – 6-2, 6-3 over Myah Petchey – to secure Cal’s win.
Hannah Viller Moeller added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Karin Young, and then Ivanov bested Martinez Moral 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 to close out the match.
“We put together another convincing conference win on the road,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “I was just pleased that we did what we needed to do and competed well as a team today.”
Cal next plays at Pacific on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
