BERKELEY – The California men’s tennis team will begin 2023 with a pair of competitions in Honolulu, as the Golden Bears face No. 16 Florida State on Sunday in their dual-match opener and then play in the Hawaii Invitational on Monday at the UH Tennis Complex.
 
Monday’s event includes players from 20th-ranked Duke, Hawaii and Cal.

Poll Position
Cal junior Ryder Jackson is ranked 52nd in singles, and the doubles pair of Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck is ranked 27th.
 
Scouting the Bears

  • Ryder Jackson, who transferred to Cal this season after starting his collegiate career at USC, had a good first semester as a Bear, competing in singles in the ITA National Fall Championships in November, after reaching the final at the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships and competing in the ITA All-American Championships
  • Carl Emil Overbeck, a sophomore, advanced to the singles semifinals in the super regional championships at Stanford
  • Jackson and Overbeck partnered to reach the doubles semis at super regionals
  • In October, sophomore Mikey Wright and freshman John Kim won the doubles title at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Cal
  • On Oct. 30, veteran Yuta Kikuchi captured the first professional title of his career when he beat Oklahoma’s Alex Martinez, 7-5, 6-4, in the final of the 15K Norman Open
  • Kikuchi and newcomer Siddhant Banthia advanced to the doubles semis at the Norman Open
  • Kikuchi also reached the final of the KSPF Open earlier in the fall
  • In September, Overbeck and Kikuchi repeated as the doubles champs of the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco
  • Kris Kwinta (UCLA ’08) is in his second season as the Peter Wright Director of Men’s Tennis
  • Kwinta’s staff includes second-year assistant coach and former BYU player Francis Sargeant

Scouting FSU

  • Florida State had a record of 18-11 last season, when FSU reached the NCAA super regional
