Last Time Out: Bears Shut Out Tritons
On a busy day for the Bears last Sunday, Carl Emil Overbeck clinched a 5-0, nighttime victory over UC San Diego and teamed with Mikey Wright to clinch the doubles point against the Tritons at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Jonathan Irwanto and Timofey Stepanov won their consolation semifinal Sunday morning in the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship, also at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, but the consolation final was rained out.

Cal’s second-seeded duo of Qian Sun and Alex Chang had the Bears’ deepest run in the doubles tournament in reaching the quarterfinals of the main draw. The open tournament featured numerous Cal alumni and affiliates, including the pair of Kris Kwinta, the Peter Wright Director of Men’s Tennis, and assistant coach Francis Sargeant, which reached the round of 32.

In doubles in the afternoon match vs. UCSD, Chang and John Kim beat Philip Lan and Carson Lee, 6-2, on court three. But Ryder Jackson and Sun – in the latter’s first collegiate doubles match – lost on court one, 7-5, to UCSD’s Zach Pellouchoud and Pelayo Rodriguez. Wright and Overbeck bested William Lan and Daniel Traxler, 7-6(4), on court two to secure the point for Cal.

The Bears were dominant in singles, collecting wins from Kim, Stepanov, Overbeck – who topped Lee, 7-6(8), 6-1, to clinch – and Irwanto to complete the 5-0 result.
