EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon men’s tennis dropped today’s match to No. 29 California 4-3 at the Student Tennis Center.
Cal quickly got the first win of the day in doubles after a 6-3 win on court three. Oregon’s No.1 team went back-and-forth and looked good, but fell 7-5 to give the doubles point to Cal. The Ducks would need four wins in doubles to take the match.
Freshman Vlad Breazu dropped his court five match 6-3, 6-3 and it was a 2-0 Cal lead. Oregon’s Luke Vandecasteele played in place of the injured Ray Lo on court six and got the first point of the day for Oregon, a 7-5, 6-1 win. No. 30 ranked Yuta Kikuchi then clinched the next point for Cal and the Golden Bears were one point away from victory.
Momentum swung in favor of Oregon after that, Jesper Klov-Nilsson secured a straight-set win on court three, and Quinn Vandecasteele came from behind for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win. Tied at three-all, the Ducks needed a result on court four. Ivailo Keremedchiev dropped his first set before storming back to a 6-3 second-set win. In the third and final set, things were even at 5-5, before Carl Emil Overbeck clinched the match in favor of Cal, winning the third set 7-5.
