Blue Devils Fall, 4-3, in ACC Quarterfinals


CARY, N.C. – The sixth-ranked Duke women’s tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to 20th-ranked Georgia Tech (15-8) in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship on Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.  

Duke fell to 22-4 overall on the season and will next await the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday, May 1 at 6 p.m.  The Blue Devils played the match without senior Chloe Beck, the No. 4 ranked singles player nationally, as she was competing in a professional tournament in Charleston, S.C.  

How It Happened

•    In doubles, Georgia Tech’s 85th-ranked Kylie Bilchev and Alejandra Cruz got off to a quick start and defeated Ellie Coleman and Cameron Morra, 6-0.

•    Georgia Tech’s Carol Lee and Rosie Garcia Gross faced Duke’s 81st-ranked Iuliia Bryzgalova and Georgia Drummy in a back-and-forth contest.  The match featured four ties and after a 4-4 score midway through the match the Yellow Jackets won two close games to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 ledger.

•    After falling behind 3-0, Duke’s 86th-ranked Karolina Berankova and Emma Jackson cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 3-4.  In a key deuce point, Georgia Tech won it and led 5-3.  Trailing 5-4, the Blue Devils evened the score, 5-5, after the doubles point was clinched.  

•    Duke came out strong to start singles and led early on four of the six courts.  

•    Drummy continued her stellar play with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court three versus 87th-ranked Mahak Jain to even the score, 1-1.  

•    Morra, ranked No. 74 nationally, faced 13th-ranked Lee on court one.  After dropping the first set, 6-1, Morra fell down 2-1, but battled back to take a 3-2 lead.

•    With Georgia Tech leading the match, 2-1, the Blue Devils were able to win on courts five and six to take a 3-2 advantage.

•    On court six, Brianna Shvets of Duke registered a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over Sharabura.  Shvets led 5-3 in the first set, but the match would end up going to a tiebreaker.  After dropping the first point, Shvets built a 4-2 lead and went on to clinch the first set, 7-4.  In the second set, Shvets never trailed.  With the score tied, 3-3, Shvets won three straight games to win, 6-3.
