Cabezas and Tomase Advance to Sweet 16 in NCAA Doubles Championship

STILLWATER, Okla. – The doubles pair of Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase from the Tennessee women’s team earned a First-Round win to reach the Round of 16 in the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday night at Greenwood Tennis Center. Cabezas and Tomase knocked off Virginia’s Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard, 6-2, 6-2.

The Lady Volunteers dropped the first game in the opening set, but settled in and took six of the next seven to fend off the Cavaliers and gain the advantage. Together, they achieved a superb 75 percent first-serve clip, successfully landing 18 out of 24 serves during their first set.

In the second set, the Big Orange pair sustained their momentum and mirrored their first success with another 6-2 victory to seal the match. The duo collected a combined 30 out of 49 (61 percent) points in the final set. Cabezas and Tomase upped their already high service rate in the second set with a whopping 81 percent mark, landing 21 of their 26 serves.

In the match as a whole, Cabezas and Tomase earned two shutout games. They broke Virginia’s serve 55 percent of their opportunities, doing so in six of 11 chances.
