STILLWATER, Okla. – The doubles pair of Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase from the Tennessee women’s tennis team posted a stellar elite eight victory on Thursday evening at Greenwood Tennis Center, advancing to the NCAA Doubles Championship semifinals. No. 11 Cabezas and Tomase earned the final four bid by defeating No. 7 Mia Kupres and Mary Stoiana from Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-2.
The Lady Vols were stellar in the first set, recording a 6-3 win against the Aggies. Collectively, they captured 30 of the 56 points contested, boasting a 56 percent success rate. Additionally, they excelled as servers, securing 65 percent of their service games, winning 20 of a possible 31 points.
In the closing set, Cabezas and Tomase warded off the Aggies in 6-2 fashion. The pair posted a strong 70 percent clip in first-serve points won. They also won 75 percent of break points, tallying three out of the four point.
Overall, the duo secured 57 percent of the possible points, claiming 57 of 100 points.
Cabezas and Tomase become the sixth pair in program history to advance to the semifinal round of the NCAA Doubles Championship, including the first under head coach Alison Ojeda. The last Tennessee duo to do so was No. 4 Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely in 2013, advancing with a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Arizona State’s Jacqueline Cako and Nicole Smith, 6-2, 6-2.
Thursday’s victory clinched the second occasion in program history the Lady Vols have progressed to the NCAA Quarterfinals in both the team Championship and doubles championship, joining 2010.

Cabezas and Tomase will square off Friday against No. 2 Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen of Pepperdine. The time of the match is to be determined.
