Bulldogs Bound For ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. – Mississippi State men’s tennis is looking to secure a spot at the ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego, California next month with a successful showing over the next five days.

The Bulldogs are bound for Auburn to compete in the ITA Southern Regional Championships beginning on Thursday. Last year, Nemanja Malesevic represented MSU in both singles and doubles at ITA Fall Nationals alongside partner Carles Hernandez.

Dusan Milanovic also competed in both singles and doubles at ITA Nationals last year while playing for Presbyterian.

Matt Roberts‘ Bulldogs will send seven players across the state line to participate in the ITA Southern Regional Championship beginning with Marshall Landry making his collegiate debut on Thursday at 9 a.m.

Landry will meet fellow freshman Theo Mottier of South Alabama in the opening round of singles qualifying. The winner of that match will move on to meet senior Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez of Louisiana in the second round.

Freshman Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes received a first-round bye in qualifying and will take on the winner between Ole Miss sophomore Gordon Whitwell and UAB sophomore Iker Dellien.

Three of State’s players received top 10 seeds in the singles’ main draw – Milanovic (2), Petar Jovanovic (5) and Benito Sanchez Martinez (9) – and thus received first-round byes. Freshman Radomir Tomic also qualified for the main draw.

The Bulldogs will also have a trio of doubles teams competing in the main draw, including the tournament’s No. 2 overall seed – Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez. That duo is coming off a quarterfinals finish at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma last week where they reeled off five victories, including three over ranked opponents.

One of Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez’s wins came at the hands of the nation’s fifth-ranked doubles team. Jovanovic also reached quarterfinals in singles at the event and won 10 of the 13 total matches he competed in over a five-day span.

Landry and Malesevic will also be joining forces in doubles along with Ferrer Guimaraes and Milanovic.
