Buffs Struggle on Day One

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team competed in the first day of the San Diego State Invitational at the Aztec Tennis Center on Friday, but struggled to find their footing going 3-9 combined as a team in both doubles and singles.

This was not the start to the weekend the Buffs were hoping for by any means. They struggled from the first doubles serve of the morning losing three of the first four matches.

The lone bright spot early on came from Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec competing for only the second time together. Against Gloria Alogo and Andjela Skrobonja from San Diego State they picked up where they left off at the ITA Mountain Region Championship, winning 6-4.

As the team flipped the mindset to singles play the struggles continued, dropping six of eight singles matches. But like in doubles El Sayed and Rebec stood out.

El Sayed took on Boisie State’s Pauline Ernstberger early in the afternoon and quickly took control, taking the first set 6-2. A tough battle in the second set would culminate in a final seven-point tiebreaker to decide the match. After a tough back-and-forth El Sayed would close just as she opened, strong, winning the final set 7-6(2).

For Rebec, she controlled the entire match from start to finish. Against Luana Avelar from Colorado State, she began with a dominating 6-0 first set win. The second set wasn’t quite as smooth but the outcome was the same. Rebec finished her day with a 6-3 second set victory to close the match.

The Buffs will look to bounce back tomorrow returning to the San Diego State Invitational for day two. Each player will get to play at least one doubles and one singles match.
