Britain's Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid warm-up for Australian Open with Melbourne Wheelchair Open title win

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid warmed up for their bid for a fifth consecutive Australian Open men’s doubles title by winning the Melbourne Wheelchair Open.

The British pair beat Joachim Gerard and Stephane Houdet, who will be two of their rivals in next week’s Grand Slam, on a match tie-break 6-3 1-6 (10-8).

Hewett and Reid have won 18 Grand Slam doubles titles as a pair, including each in Australia since 2020.

But Hewett lost in the Melbourne Open’s men’s singles final against Tokito Oda.

He was beaten 6-2 7-6 (8-6) by Japan’s Oda, the 2023 French Open and Wimbledon champion.

The wheelchair events have been expanded to 16 players in each of the men’s, women’s and quad categories at this year’s Australian Open and begin on 23 January in Melbourne.
