GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida women’s tennis athletes Carly Briggs, Sara Dahlstrom, Alicia Dudeney and Bente Spee have been selected to compete in the upcoming NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships, the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Subcommittee announced on Tuesday.
Briggs and Dahlstrom will make their singles championship debut, while Dudeney/Spee will represent the Gators in the doubles championship for the first time.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 18-20. This year’s event will be conducted jointly with the NCAA Divisions II and III Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships and hosted by the University of Central Florida and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission.
Dahlstrom, currently ranked No. 17 in the ITA’s singles rankings, has proven to be one of the best singles players in the country. Since taking over the top singles spot for the Gators on March 17, the First Team All-SEC selection has a 7-3 record with all seven victories coming against ranked-opponents. Overall, the native of Stockholm, Sweden is 13-6 in dual matches and 6-4 in the SEC with nine ranked-victories. The junior has been ranked in the top 125 since Feb. 8, as well as in the top 50 for the past six weeks.
Also earning an at-large selection, No. 46-ranked Briggs recorded a 9-8 singles record in duals and was 6-4 in the SEC at the one and two slots. When matching up with ranked opponents, Briggs has earned three singles victories, all against top-85 opponents. The Second Team All-SEC selection has been ranked as high as No. 38 this season and held down a spot in the top-50 for the past eight weeks.
Exclusively playing at the top doubles position, Dudeney/Spee lead the team with 9-3 record in duals. Dudeney/Spee took over Florida’s No. 1 spot doubles spot on March 3 and went 7-2 in the SEC with three top-35 ranked wins. In the latest ITA rankings, the pair is ranked No. 23 in the country.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players.
