It’s the first SEC honor of Braswell’s career.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Jonah Braswell earned the first SEC honor of his career, picking up SEC Freshman of the Week, as the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
Braswell becomes the first Florida freshman be awarded SEC Freshman of the Week since Nate Bonetto on March 9, 2022. This marks back-to-back weeks a Gator has earned a weekly conference honor after Lukas Greif won Player of the Week on Feb. 1.
Upgraded from No. 93 to No. 48 today in the ITA Singles Rankings, Braswell was the only Gator to notch two ranked-wins in singles against a trio of Top-20 ranked teams this last week. In the first rivalry match of his career against then-No. 12 Florida State, Braswell clinched the match win for Florida on court four by defeating then-No. 53 Jamie Connel, 7-6 (8), 6-3. The Sarasota, Fla. native was down 6-3 in the first set breaker, but rallied back to win the first frame. After being down 3-2 in the second set, Braswell showed more fight and responded by winning four consecutive games to earn the first clinch of his young career at USTA’s College MatchDay.
During the SEC/Pac-12 Challenge, Braswell earned another ranked-win in straight sets over Southern Cal’s then-No. 65 Bradley Frye, 6-4, 6-2. Playing with partner Greif, the then-No. 43 ranked pair clinched both doubles points against Southern Cal and Stanford, respectively, with two 6-4 victories at court three. Braswell/Greif are now ranked No. 52 in the country with a 9-3 doubles record and five doubles points clinched this season.
Braswell leads Florida with 20 singles wins, six ranked wins and five dual wins. With his 20th singles win against USC on Feb. 4, Braswell became the third Florida freshmen to hit the mark in the past five seasons joining Ben Shelton (2021) and Sam Riffice (2019).
The Gators return to the court from Feb. 17-20 with a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, Ill.
