SEATTLE – Senior Cesar Bouchelaghem moved into Monday’s semifinals in both singles, and in doubles with teammate Dzianis Zharyn, as the ITA Northwest Regionals wrapped up the weekend with two more days left to decide the titles. Two rounds of singles and one round of doubles were contested on Sunday, getting down to four remaining singles players and four doubles duos.
UW advanced three men into the singles quarterfinals, but only Bouchelaghem broke up a great day for the Cal Bears, as they make up the other three singles semifinalists.
Nedim Suko had one massive win in the round of 16, and nearly pulled off a second, as he upset 73rd-ranked Max Basing of Stanford in three sets, and then had two match point chances in the second set against 44th-ranked Theo Dean of Cal in the quarterfinals, but Dean saved them and rallied for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 win.
Dzianis Zharyn had a comeback singles win over Oregon’s Vlad Breazu in the round of 16, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, but he came up short in the quarters to 56th-ranked Carl Emil Overbeck of Cal, 6-3, 6-4.
Soham Purohit was just a couple points shy of another ranked win for the Dawgs, as he lost in a third set tiebreaker to 66th-ranked Kyle Kang of Stanford, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5). But Bouchelaghem got some revenge as he defeated Kang in the next round, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Singles semifinals are scheduled to start on Monday at 10 a.m., followed by the doubles semis. NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship bids are awarded to the singles finalists, and doubles champions.
