Boilers Score 2 in Season Finale

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Purdue men’s tennis team tied their season-high point total against a Big Ten opponent in Sunday’s 2-4 loss at Penn State.

The Boilermakers closed out the 2023 regular season with one of their strongest outings against a conference opponent this season. Purdue secured two victories in singles and pushed three matches to a third set.

Daniel Labrador and Tomasz Dudek secured Purdue’s first points with straight-set wins. Labrador tacked on his second career win in Big Ten play and first conference victory at No. 1. The first-year transfer will finish his debut season with 10 wins in singles and eight wins in doubles play with a ranked win to sport. Dudek’s win in the spring finale is his first conference win of the year, and first since the 2022 Big Ten Tournament.

The Boilers were able to push Penn State to the limit throughout the match, but could not cross the finish line. Purdue led 5-4 at doubles No. 3 with the point on the line, but the Nittany Lions forced a best-of-five match and took the early lead.

In singles, Michal Wozniak commanded the first set with a 6-2 lead, however, his opponent roared back with a win in three sets.

Mujtaba Ali-Khan and Milledge Cossu both attempted to mount a comeback to keep the match alive with wins in the second set, erasing their deficits. Ali-Khan’s dominant 6-0 victory in the second couldn’t give him victory as the Nittany Lions took the point and match in a 6-3 decision to end the regular season with a 2-4 loss.
