Boilers Dominate Singles In Non-Conference Win

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –The Purdue men’s tennis closed out their non-conference slate with a 4-3 victory over the Butler Bulldogs on Sunday.

The Boilermakers dominated the day at singles with three victories in straight sets and one match in three.

Milledge Cossu started off the barrage of points by taking his opponent to a tiebreak in the first set. His 7-6(3) win put him up a set and his momentum could not be stopped as he easily closed out the first win of the day to the match at one all.

Next up, the talented freshman Mujtaba Ali-Khan overcame adversity against an experienced senior Bulldog. Ali-Khan trailed early in the first set but fought his way back to win in the second of four Boilermaker tiebreaks. His victory propelled him to his fourth win at No. 3 and seventh win of his spring campaign.

With a Bulldog win at No. 1, Purdue once again pulled ahead in a competitive match. Michal Wozniak’s stellar performance at No. 2 gave Purdue a 3-2 lead with the final matches in favor of the Boilers.

Wozniak used his experience and poise to wear down his foe. While Butler used its power to generate strong returns, Wozniak looked agile and fierce at the net winning several points by placing the ball where there was no chance of return.

Purdue clinched the victory with a sentimental match. Hassan Baroudi defeated his opponent Aidan William in three, battling back from a set down. Baroudi was familiar with his opponent as William is an old friend who used to be a practice partner. Despite the heartfelt moment between friends, Baroudi came to battle and finished with the clinching point of the Boilermaker victory.
