Blue Devils Post Strong Showing on Day One of ITA Regional Championship


CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis team posted a strong showing on the opening day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday.

In singles play, junior Emma Jackson opened the day with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina’s Jesse Hollins. Jackson advances to the round of 16 and will face Eleni Louka of Clemson at 9 a.m., on Saturday. Classmate Ellie Coleman advanced after a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lucianna Piedra of Presbyterian in her opening match. Coleman will meet North Carolina’s Reese Brantmeier at 9 a.m., on Saturday.

Sophomore Katie Codd also moves on after sweeping seventh-seeded Lucia Quiterio of Charlotte in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, in her opening match. Codd next faces Furman’s Sara Isabel Snyder at 9 a.m., on Saturday.

In the A2 bracket, senior Karolina Berankova registered a strong 7-5, 6-1 victory over Amila Jusufbegovic of Charleston Southern in the opening round. Berankova will battle NC State’s Anna Zyryanova in her next match, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Duke carried its momentum into the afternoon session, finishing 3-1 in doubles action. The Blue Devil duo of Jackson and Coleman defeated Ellie Murphy and Olwyn Ryan-Bovey of Appalachian State, 8-4, in their opening match before powering past Elon’s Lizette Reding and Sibel Tanik, 8-0, to close out the day. Jackson and Coleman advance to the semifinals and will meet Abbey Forbes/Reilly Tran of North Carolina on Saturday at 2 p.m.

In the A1 doubles bracket, the tandem of Kimchi and Berankova bested Appalachian State’s Maggie Pate and Naledi Manyube, 8-3, before dropping a tight match to Brooke Killingsworth and Marcella Cruz of Wake Forest, 8-6.
