Blue Devils Net Road Win at No. 31 Wake Forest, 4-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– The 23rd-ranked Duke women’s tennis team went on the road Friday afternoon to Winston-Salem, N.C., and came away with a key road victory as the Blue Devils posted a 4-1 win over 31st-ranked Wake Forest (12-7, 4-2 ACC) at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. 
 
After dropping the doubles point, the Blue Devils (11-5, 4-3 ACC) collected four straight singles wins en route to claiming their fourth ACC victory of the season and first on the road.  Sophomore Katie Codd improved to 8-0 at the No. 4 singles slot and clinched the victory for Duke. 
 
How It Happened

  • Wake Forest jumped out in doubles action with the advantage early leading on all three courts.
  • Mia Ahmad and Sankavi Gownder of the Demon Deacons went on to register a 6-1 victory on court three against Duke’s Brianna Shvets and Iuliia Bryzgalova.
  • Wake Forest clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court two as Whitley Pate and Casie Wooten posted a 6-2 victory over Emma Jackson and Karolina Berankova.
  • Marcella Cruz and Brooke Killingsworth of Wake were leading Duke’s Shavit Kimchi and Katie Codd, 5-4, when the point was clinched.
  • During doubles action, inclement weather forced the match to be moved indoors.
  • Duke turned the momentum around in its favor in singles by winning the first set on five of the six courts.
  • In a span of a few minutes, the Blue Devils turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead as Shvets collected a 7-5, 6-4 win on court five against Gownder.
