Blue Devils Feature Solid Start at Kitty Harrison Invitational


DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis team opened the fall campaign Friday morning in Chapel Hill at the Kitty Harrison Invitational with seven victories against Penn State at the Chewning Tennis Center. 
 
In singles action, Duke’s 73rd-ranked Eleana Yu totaled a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (8) win over Olivia Dorner, while 41st-ranked Emma Jackson posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Yvonne Zuffova.  Making her return from her season-ending injury a year ago, senior Ellie Coleman, who is preseason ranked No. 53, posted a 6-1, 7-5 win against Maiko Uchijima. 
 
Listed as No. 10 in the newcomer singles rankings, Duke rookie Irina Balus won her first match as a Blue Devil with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jelena Vico.  Junior Katie Codd, who is ranked No. 49 nationally, also posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Patrica Grigoras.  Blue Devil freshman Ava Krug dropped a 6-7 (4), 6-7 (4) match against Jordina Cegarra Ramirez to close singles play. 
 
In doubles action, 58th-ranked Jackson/Yu continued their stellar play with a 6-2 win over Zuffova/Grigoras, while Krug/Codd registered a 6-2 victory against Vico/Ramirez.  To round out doubles play, Duke’s Coleman and Shavit Kimchi, who are preseason ranked No. 61, dropped a 3-6 decision to 49th-ranked Dorner/Uchimima. 
 
On Saturday, the Blue Devils will go up against Florida at 9:30 a.m., on courts 7-12 and are scheduled to close the event Sunday at 1:30 p.m., versus Old Dominion on courts 7-12.
