DURHAM – The 19th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Blue Devils dropped a 4-1 decision to eighth-ranked North Carolina at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
The Blue Devils fell to 12-6, 5-4 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels improved to 15-3, 8-1 in ACC play.
How It Happened
- To begin the match, the Tar Heels started hot by taking the doubles point with victories on courts one and two to go ahead, 1-0.
- Shavit Kimchi and Katie Codd dropped their match on court one to the 17th-ranked duo of Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig, 6-1.
- The point-clinching match came on court two in a back-and-forth battle between the duo of Emma Jackson and Karolina Berankova and the UNC team of Elizabeth Scotty and Anika Yarlagadda. Jackson and Berankova ultimately dropped the match, 6-3, clinching the doubles point for the Tar Heels.
- The Blue Devils’ tandem of Briana Shvets and Iuliia Bryzgalova were tied on court three, 5-5, when the doubles point was clinched.
- Bryzgalova, a graduate student from Moscow, Russia, evened the score, 1-1, by defeating 20th-ranked Yarlagadda on court three, 6-2, 6-2.It marked Bryzgalova’s second straight ranked win as she continued her stellar play.
- On court four, the Tar Heels were able to regain the lead as 37th-ranked Tanguilig defeated 94th-ranked Codd, 7-6, 6-3. Codd, a native of Carlsbad, Calif., opened the match leading 5-3, but Tanguilig responded by winning three out of the next four games to tie the score, 6-6.In the crucial tiebreaker, Codd led 3-2 and was tied, 6-6,…
