LA JOLLA – The California men’s tennis tandem of Siddhant Banthia and Carl Emil Overbeck won twice on Friday to advance to the round of 16 in the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship. The Golden Bear duo of Yuta Kikuchi and Lucas Magnaudet won its first match but then lost in the round of 32 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
After sitting out on Thursday with a first-round bye, the third-seeded Banthia and Overbeck defeated the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pair of Ian Habbestad and Morgan Schilling, 4-0, 4-2, in Friday’s round of 64 and then bested Stanford’s Anders Matta and Neel Rajesh, 4-2, 4-1, in the round of 32. The Bears next play San Diego State’s Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
The fourth-seeded Kikuchi and Magnaudet – who also had a first-round bye – opened Friday with a 4-0, 5-3 victory over Bryce Keim and Nils Plutat in the open tournament’s round of 64. But the Bears fell to the UC Davis team of Sam De Vries and Constantinos Djakouris, 3-5, 4-2, 7-2, in their next match.
A third Cal pair – Derrick Chin and John Kim – was slated to play former Bears Paul Barretto and Bjorn Hoffmann in the first round of the consolation draw on Friday. But Barretto and Hoffmann advanced with a walkover.
The tournament ends on Sunday.
Pro Bears: In the doubles semifinal round of the Mexican Open on Friday in Acapulco, Cal alumni Ben McLachlan and Andre Goransson lost to Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow, 7-5, 6-7(2), 13-11.
