Bears Play At ITA All-American

BERKELEY – Two Golden Bears will represent the California women’s tennis program in this week’s ITA All-American Championships, as sophomores Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm compete in the annual national event in Cary, North Carolina. Cary Tennis Park, Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State are the hosts of the ITA All-American Championships.

On Wednesday, Alsola and Wiersholm start play in the 32-team field in main draw doubles, and Alsola will compete in the 32-player field in main draw singles at Cary Tennis Park. Wiersholm played in the qualifying singles bracket but didn’t reach the main draw (see below).

Times for the Bears’ Wednesday matches have yet to be announced.

Wiersholm Vies For Main Draw Spot In Cary
Katja Wiersholm dropped her qualifying singles opener of the ITA All-American Championships on Monday, falling to Ohio State’s Sydni Ratliff at Cary Tennis Park. Wiersholm, ranked 97th, won the first set, but the ninth-seeded and 51st-ranked Buckeye won the match, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0.

In the consolation bracket, Wiersholm was slated to face Pennsylvania’s Sabine Rutlauka on Tuesday in Cary but withdrew from the match with an injury.

Bears Compete In USTA Pro Circuit Events

Playing in the 25K Ascension Project Open in Redding this week, Cal senior Valentina Ivanov won her singles qualifying opener vs. Liz Pinson 6-1, 6-0 but fell to Aspen Schuman 6-1, 6-2. Ivanov is also playing in doubles with Veronica Miroshnichenko, in the USTA Pro Circuit tournament that ends Sunday.
