Bears Head To All-American, Aggie Invite

Carl Emil Overbeck is one of five Bears who will compete at the All-American in Tulsa.


Four members of the California men’s tennis team will compete in the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis starting Friday, while five Golden Bears will play in the ITA All-American Championships starting Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Bears and the rest of the field in Tulsa are vying to qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships in November.
 
Mikey Wright, John Kim, Alex Aney and Ethan Schiffman are heading to the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis for the Aggie Invite, which is slated to end on Sunday. Alex Chang, Derrick Chen, Jonathan Irwanto, Carl Emil Overbeck and Tim Stepanov are set to compete in the ITA All-American Championships at the University of Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center and at the Case Tennis Center in LaFortune Park. The All-American concludes on Oct. 8.
 
In Davis on Friday, the Aggie Invite will start with a doubles opening round of 16 at 9 a.m. PT, with the first round of singles beginning at 12:15 p.m. In the doubles first round, Cal’s Kim and Schiffman meet Felipe Rincon and Paulo Hugo Etchecoin of Saint Mary’s, and Wright and Aney face the Gaels’ Diego Jarry and Maxant Thibaud. In the singles flight A first round, Kim takes on Pacific’s third-seeded Terence Das and Schiffman plays Ryan Torres of UC Davis, while in flight B the third-seeded Aney plays Sacramento State’s Jiri Novak and Wright faces Santa Clara’s second-seeded Alexander Watanabe Eriksson.

Last Year At The All-American
Cal’s Ryder Jackson won four times in pre-qualifying singles to reach the qualifying round at the ITA All-American Championships. Jackson, who won his first qualifying singles match, fell in the second round and did not advance to the main draw.
 
The Bears did not compete in the Aggie Invite last season.
