Tiziana-Marie Schomburg won in doubles Sunday as Cal finished play in Arizona.

TEMPE, Ariz. – The California women’s tennis team posted three singles victories and two doubles wins Sunday as the Thunderbird Invitational came to an end at Arizona State.

Tiziana-Marie Schomburg and Sophie Hernandez defeated Northern Arizona’s Leontina Stojanovic and Laura Duhl 6-2 in doubles, while Makenna Thiel and Naomi Xu bested Arizona’s Teja Tirunelveli and Jose Usereau 6-4.

In singles, Cal claimed wins from Cami Brown, who beat Grand Canyon’s Angelina Mihajlovic 6-4, 6-3; Xu, over ASU’s Karsyn Evans 7-6(5), 6-3; and Hernandez, against Northern Arizona’s Leontina Stojanovic 6-4, 6-1. Schomburg fell to Northern Arizona’s Daryna Shoshyna 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-2, while Thiel lost to Kansas State’s Zali Morris 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3).

The end of the Thunderbird Invite concluded a busy week for the Bears, who played in three different tournaments including the ITA Conference Masters Championships in Rome, Georgia, and the ITA West Sectional Championships in Los Angeles.

“The best part was everyone on the team having the opportunity to compete this weekend,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “The team did good job of staying connected to each other despite being in three different states. Everyone was happy to follow along with how successful everyone was at the various tournaments. Definitely the highlight was getting those Bears to NCAAs and continuing to compete for a bit longer this fall.

“We’re happy to have three Bears in singles (Katja Wiersholm, Mao Mushika and Lan Mi) and one doubles team (Mushika and Jessica Alsola) play at NCAAs. It’s nice to see the debut of Mao in NCAA singles, Katja make her second singles appearance, and we’re happy to see Lan get her first postseason appearance as a senior and only second year on our team, along with getting the doubles bid. We were close to getting (quarterfinalists) Berta Passola Folch and Lan qualify in doubles as well. They played quite well at sectionals.”

The Bears next compete in the NCAA individual championships from Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas.
