Baris Advances to Consolation Semifinals at ITA All-American Championships


TULSA, Okla. – Michigan State men’s tennis freshman Ozan Baris wrapped up play at the ITA Men’s All-American Championships Saturday afternoon after advancing to the consolation semifinals.   

Baris, who began play on Monday, Oct. 3, knocked off six ranked opponents during his run.  

Baris’ wildcard entry into the tournament entered him in the qualifying round of 128 beginning play in Monday’s qualifying round of 128. He topped Georgia’s Trent Bryde, ranked No. 73 this season, in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to Tuesday’s round of 64. 

Baris defeated No. 107 Karl Poling of North Carolina Tuesday morning, 6-4, 6-2, before collecting another ranked win over No. 122 Jordan Hason of Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon. His pair of wins advanced him to the main draw of the tournament. 

On Wednesday, Baris faced Pepperdine’s 15th-ranked Daniel de Jonge in the main draw round of 64, falling 2-6, 6-7(7). The loss moved him to the consolation bracket, entering the round of 32. 

Baris picked up another three wins in the consolation bracket, defeating No. 49 Hunter Heck of Illinois, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday. He knocked off his second Big Ten opponent on Friday, No. 3 and second-overall seed Cannon Kingsley of Ohio State, 6-2, 7-4, before defeating No. 15 Ronnie Hohmann (LSU), 6-4, 6-0 in the consolation quarterfinals. 

Baris’ run came to an end in Saturday’s consolation semifinals, falling to Standford’s Nishesh Basavareddy, 1-6, 4-6. Basavareddy, who won the US Open Junior doubles title with Baris last month, ranks second in the ITA’s newcomer rankings. Basavareddy went on to defeat Ohio State’s JJ Tracy in the consolation finals Sunday.  

Baris and Michigan State men’s tennis are back in action in next week’s ITA Midwest Regional. The five-day tournament begins on Thursday, Oct. 20 and runs through Monday, Oct. 24 in Champaign, Ill.
