DURHAM, N.C. – The Wisconsin women’s tennis team (3-1) came away with a 4-2 win over SMU on Saturday, 28 in Durham, North Carolina on Saturday.
The Badgers started the day out strong in doubles, taking the point behind wins from duo Maria Sholokhova and Ava Markham and Alina Mukhortova and Xinyu Cai. Sholokhova and Markham made a statement against the 32nd-ranked duo of Jackie Nylander and Taylor Johnson, winning 6-3. Mukhortova and Cai sealed the doubles action with a 7-5 win in their match.
Markham started off singles action with a win over No. 113-ranked Hadley Doyle, 6-3, tallying her third win over a ranked opponent this spring. Cai followed up with a 7-5, 6-0 win against Maja Makoric to give the Badgers their third overall point. Maria Sholokhova clinched the match for Wisconsin with a straight-set win against Taylor Johnson, 6-2, 6-4.
With the win, that the Badgers advance to face 5th-ranked Duke on Sunday, January 29.
