Arizona Wraps Up First Fall Tournament


San Francisco – Women’s Tennis sent two Cats to compete at Battle in the Bay for the first time since 2019. Kayla Wilkins and Midori Castillo represented Arizona in the tournament that saw the pair advance to the quarterfinals in doubles play.

The Wildcats defeated Azaria Hayes and Qianer (USF) 8-6 on Thursday, Sept. 22. In the next round, Arizona fell 8-2 to second-seeded Guillermina Grant and Dasha Vidmanova (Georgia). 

In the round of 32, Wilkins won her match in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 against Aya El Sayed (Colorado). Castillo battled No. 44 Janice Tjen (Pepperdine) but ultimately fell 6(1)-7(7), 1-6. 

Wilkins was knocked out of the main draw after eighth-seeded Meg Kowalski (Georgia) defeated the Wildcat in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Castillo competed in R16 of the consolation draw and lost in a tiebreaker against Tomi Main (Pacific) 3-6, 6-1, [7-10]. 

It was the first time for both Wilkins and Castillo at the Northern California tennis classic. Next up for the women’s team is the Women’s Intercollegiate Championships in San Diego Sept. 29 through Oct. 2.
