Arizona Knocks Out Utah 4-1 in Round One


OJAI, Calif. – #50 Arizona [9] knocked out #48 Utah [8] 4-1 in the first round of the Pac-12 Championship Tournament. 

In a lengthy doubles competition that saw all three matches finish, the ‘Cats came out victorious after two intense tiebreakers on courts one and three. Arizona tandem Salma Ziouti and Reece Carter defeated Tattini/Goncharova 7-6(8) then the sophomore Wildcat duo Belen Nevenhoven and Midori Castillo clinched the point 7-6(4) against Lopez/Barksdale. 

During singles play Arizona snagged three wins to put away the overall win. Freshman Carter hailing from Canada dominated on court one, only letting up two games to Townsend in the first set then sweeping the Ute 6-0 in the second. Then Tanvi Narendran, another freshman Wildcat, defeated Horwood in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 at six singles. A spirited Ziouti split sets with Tattini, falling 4-6 in the first then coming back 6-1 in the second before clinching the first round win 6-2 in the third. 

This is the first time Arizona has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament since 2019. They take on #8 Stanford [1] tomorrow at 12 p.m.
