Arizona Closes Out Wildcat Invite, USC +1


TUCSON – The Arizona men’s tennis team concluded its first weekend of fall competition on Sunday, charting six wins. Four of those wins came over ranked opponents at the USC +1, and one of those wins was a top-10 victory.

At the USC +1, Jay Friend and Nick Lagaev started the day off with a top-10 takedown of No. 7 Fillipo Moroni and Matthew Thomson (Wake Forest), 6-3.

No. 87 Friend followed up the doubles win with his third ranked singles win of the weekend. He defeated UNC’s No. 106 Anuj Watane in a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Competition in South Carolina continued with a win by 50th-ranked Gustaf Strom. The senior defeated Connor Krug of Duke in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

No. 92 Nick Lagaev closed out the day at the USC +1 for Arizona with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of No. 54 Andrew Zhang (Duke).

At the Wildcat Invite, Casper Christensen defeated UNLV’s Anton Ornberg 6-4, 6-4, and Dominique Rolland rounded out the day’s wins with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of New Mexico’s Ryoma Matsushita.

Arizona returns to action as it travels to San Francisco, Calif., for the Battle of the Bay Sept. 21-24.
