Alabama Women’s Tennis’ Anne Marie Hiser Earns USTA National Scholarship

ORLANDO, Fla. – Alabama women’s tennis player Anne Marie Hiser has earned the 2022 USTA Novo Nordisk Donnelly National Scholarship, the United States Tennis Association announced recently. The award is given annually to two tennis players that compete at the collegiate level who have been diagnosed with diabetes.

“I am beyond blessed to have received the Novo Nordisk Donnelly National Scholarship at the US Open. It is an honor to accept this award and I hope to inspire other tennis players dealing with Type 1 diabetes. It shows that a dream and hard work will be recognized regardless of your individual circumstances. It was so exciting to be in New York City, to experience the U.S. Open and meet everyone involved with this award, especially Billie Jean King.”

  • A junior, Hiser was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes at the age of six
  • Won the 2021 ITA Southern Regional Doubles title as a sophomore
  • Recorded a team-leading 23 doubles victories last season
  • Member of UA’s first doubles pair to advance to the ITA National Fall Championship since 2016
  • Holds a 35-22 overall singles record
  • Posted a 41-24 doubles record over her first two years at Alabama
  • Two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete

USTA Nova Nordisk Donnelly National Scholarship

  • The scholarship was first established by Billie Jean King in 1998 before being associated with the USTA Foundation for the first time in 2021
  • The Novo Nordisk Donnelly Scholarship is named after two collegiate tennis champions, Diane Donnelly Stone and Tracey Donnelly Maltby, sisters who have lived with diabetes since childhood
  • Two collegiate athletes have been awarded the scholarship every year since 1998
