Alabama Opens ITA Southern Regional Championships with a Pair of Doubles wins


AUBURN, Ala. –– Alabama men’s tennis had two doubles teams advance to the Round of 32 Friday at the ITA Southern Regional Championships. Roan Jones and Matias Ponce De Leon posted the Tide’s first win of the day as Filip Planinsek and Andrii Zimnokh made it a perfect sweep in paired play.

Jones and Ponce De Leon dropped just two games against their opponent from Jacksonville State, defeating Xavier Sarda Marti and Alin Fatu, 6-2.

Planinsek and Zminokh recorded a strong 6-3 decision against Zach Murphy and Marko Milosavljevic from JSU.

  • Both Alabama doubles pairings will return to action Saturday competing in the Round of 32
  • Jones and Ponce De Leon will face Benji Jacobson and Fynn Kuenkler from Tulane at 9 a.m. CT
  • Planinsek and Zimnokh go head-to-head with Troy’s Mario Martinez Serrano and Carles Anton at 9:45 a.m.
  • Enzo Aguaird, Jones, Planinsek, Ponce De Leon and Zimnokh will also compete in singles action on Saturday with competition beginning at 10:30 a.m.
