Alabama Opens Big 12/SEC Challenge Friday


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –– The Alabama men’s tennis team will travel to Stillwater, Okla., this weekend to compete in the three-day Big 12/SEC Challenge.

The Crimson Tide will have four student-athletes compete in the three-day event as Enzo Aguiard, Zach Foster and Roan Jones take the court for the first time this season. Matias Ponce De Leon will compete for the second time this season after seeing action in last week’s SEC/Big Ten Challenge.

In addition to Alabama, the Southeastern Conference will be represented by Tennessee and Texas A&M. The Big 12 will have athletes competing from Baylor, Texas Tech and host Oklahoma State.

Tournament Format

All three days will begin with a round of doubles matches followed by all four competitors from each school competing in a singles battle.  

  • Friday | 1 p.m.
  • Saturday | 11 a.m. 
  • Sunday | 9 a.m.

The Competition

  • All three SEC teams enter the tournament with a national ranking with Alabama ranking 49th. Additionally, Tennessee ranks ninth and Texas A&M ranks 19th.
  • Texas Tech ranks 33rd, Oklahoma State ranks 38th and Baylor ranks 47th for the Big 12

About the Tide

  • The Crimson Tide is coming off a successful opening weekend, hosting the SEC/Big 10 Challenge
  • Andrii Zimnokh went undefeated in his first collegiate tournament, starting his career with three doubles and three singles wins
  • The Crimson Tide’s seven man roster includes six returners and one freshman in Zimnokh
  • Addtionally, two athletes on UA’s roster earned 2023 All-SEC honorees 
  • Filip Planinsek was named a Second Team All-SEC honoree for the second consecutive year, while Matias Ponce De Leon was selected for the conference All-Freshman team
  • The team advanced to the third round of the SEC Tournament last year
