Alabama Men’s Tennis’ Planinsek and Samofalov Defeat Top-10 Opponent at the ITA All-American Championships


TULSA, Okla. – Alabama men’s tennis player Filip Planinsek captured wins in the singles and doubles consolation draws to highlight action at the ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. No. 13 Planinsek took down the 19th-ranked player in the nation Thursday and teamed with German Samofalov for a straight-set win over the 10th-ranked doubles team.

The Tide In Singles

  • Planinsek defeated Texas A&M’s No. 19 Noah Schachter in the singles consolation draw
  • Planinsek opened with a 6-3 victory before falling in the second set, 2-6
  • He took the deciding match 6-3 to secure the victory
  • It was a rematch from a year ago when Planinsek dropped a three-set match to Schachter

The Tide In Doubles

  • Samofalov and Planinsek, ranked No. 33 in the nation, upset the No. 10-ranked Sema Pankin and Eleftherios Neos of Portland
  • The duo secured a straight set victory with both games coming down to a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5)

  • Planinsek advances in the singles consolation round to take on Nishesh Basavareddy of Stanford Friday at 9 A.M. CT
  • Planinsek and Samofalov will compete in the consolation round at 4 P.M. CT against Ryan Fishback and Jorda Chrysostom of Virginia Tech
