A Sweep in Doubles and Eleven Singles Wins for the Gators at ITA Regionals


GAINESVILLE, Fla. –  The Gators have completed day one of ITA Regionals, which consisted of one round of doubles and two rounds of singles. Florida finished the day winning all three of their doubles matches and eleven of their thirteen singles matches. 

Florida’s pairings for the Regional Championship were Rachel Gailis and Carly Briggs, Sara Dahlstrom and Bente Spee, and freshman duo Malwina Rowinska and Qavia Lopez. The 9 a.m. doubles draw set the tone for the Gators with wins across the board. Gailis/Briggs defeated Maslove/Cohen (Stetson) 8-3, Dahlstrom/Spee defeated Long/Lyshko (North Florida) 8-1, and Lopez/Rowinska defeated Falceto Font/Christians 8-2. 

In the singles draw, Florida had seven players competing in the round of 64, with Briggs, Gailis, De Oliveira, Rowinska, Lopez, and Dahlstrom defeating their opponents in straight sets to advance into the round of 32.

Sara Dahlstrom def. Anique Kattenberg (UCF) 6-0, 6-3

Malwina Rowinska def. Teodora Ristic (Mercer) 6-2, 6-3

Qavia Lopez def. Ida Ferding (FGCU) 7-5, 6-1

Rachel Gailis def. Marta Falceto Font (USF) 6-2, 6-3

Katerina Mandelikova (FIU) def. Bente Spee  7-5, 6-3

The second and final single matches for today’s main draw (10/20) were to secure a spot in the round of 16. Briggs, Gailis, De Oliveira, Lopez, and Dahlstrom all came out victorious in round two, putting them in position to continue their singles run tomorrow (10/21).

Rachel Gailis def. Magdalena Hedrzak (STET) 6-0, 7-5

Sara Dahlstrom def. Millie-Mae Matthews (FAU) 6-2, 6-1

Qavia Lopez def. Sophia Biolay (UCF) 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 

Oyinlomo Quadre (FIU) def. Malwina Rowinska 7-6, 5-7, 6-1

Head Coach Roland Thornqvist comments, “fantastic day, I was pleased with both the level of tennis we played and how we competed. It’s a tough tournament with the best players in the region and we’re grateful to be able to host it this year, which doesn’t happen often. I’m very glad that we’re taking the opportunity to compete and we are advancing a lot of players into the round of 16.”
