Singles and Doubles Advance in NCAA Championships, Cassone Earns All-American Status


STILLWATER– Tuesday was full of victories for Arizona State men’s tennis after Murphy Cassone advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Singles bracket, while also advancing to the Sweet 16 alongside teammate Jacob Bullard in the NCAA Doubles Championship Tournament. 

After advancing to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Singles Championship yesterday, Sun Devil junior, #11 Murphy Cassone, downed SMU’s #41 Trevor Svadja, after coming out on top 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, advancing him to the Sweet 16 and earning All-American honors for the second season in a row.

Also on Tuesday, the doubles pair of #40 Cassone and Jacob Bullard defeated #14 Guilio Perego and Togan Tokac of Texas A&M in the Round of 32 2-6, 6-4, 1-0(9). 

Cassone is set to face #26 Karlis Ozolins from the University of Illinois tomorrow at Greenwood Tennis Center, May 22. in Stillwater. Ozolins upset three-seeded Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc in the Round of 32 today. 

Doubles will also continue tomorrow, May 22 with ASU taking on #32 Filippos Astreinidis and Paul Inchauspe of Princeton. The time for both matches is to be determined. 

Tuesday’s win for Cassone comes after the All-American defeated #53 Jonah Braswell out of the University of Texas. Monday’s final score was 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-3 in Cassone’s favor.
