Monday, Mitsui and Diaz Earn Bids to NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships


KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Three members of the Tennessee men’s tennis team have earned bids to the 2024 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
 
Johannus Monday, who is one of 12 automatic qualifiers in the singles bracket, was named the No. 1 overall seed in the event. The two-time SEC Player of the Year boasts an impressive 22-2 record atop the Vols’ lineup and is 17-1 against ranked opponents this season.
 
The duo of Monday and Angel Diaz is one of four pairings named a 5-8 seed in the doubles draw. The two hold a 17-5 record together in 2023-24 and are 10-2 against ranked opponents in dual match play.
 
Shunsuke Mitsui, a first-team All-SEC selection, secured an at-large bid for the singles tournament. The junior tallies a 20-5 dual match record, playing at the No. 2 position and is 9-2 against ranked opponents this year. 
 
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which consists of 64 singles players and 42 doubles pairs, will take place May 20-25 at Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs May 16-19, hosted by Oklahoma State University.
 
All matches will be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
 
The Knoxville Regional of the NCAA Team Championship is set to begin this weekend, with Tennessee taking on ETSU Friday, May 3 at 1 p.m. ET. With a win Friday, Tennessee would advance to the second round of the tournament, facing the winner of the North Carolina vs. Memphis match Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
