Johns, Rodenas Reach No. 1; Duke Claims No. 12 Spot in ITA Rankings


DURHAM – Duke’s top doubles duo of redshirt senior Garrett Johns and sophomore Pedro Rodenas reached their highest career ranking together, coming in as the top team nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) tennis rankings.
 
The Blue Devil pairing was listed at No. 3 heading into the weekend but defeated the No. 1 and No. 79 ranked doubles teams to secure their new position at the top. The twosome is currently riding a nine-match winning streak and are 11-2 this season against nationally ranked opponents.
 
Johns and Rodenas also both earned a spot in the newest singles rankings. Johns is ranked No. 22 and holds a 15-4 dual-match ledger this year. The Atlanta, Ga., native holds a 13-3 record on court one and is 9-3 against nationally ranked foes. Rodenas, this week’s ACC Player of the Week, was listed at No. 43 and has a team-leading 11 victories over nationally ranked opponents this season.
 
Closing out the individual Blue Devils listed on the latest ITA rankings were the graduate student doubles duo of Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang. The pair came in at No. 70 and have compiled a 47-28 career record throughout their time together at Duke, including a 17-12 mark this year.
 
As a team, Duke is ranked No. 12 nationally.
 
Duke turns its attention to the ACC Championships, which take place at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C., from April 17-21. The Blue Devils await their opponent as they will face the winner of the Boston College/Miami vs. North Carolina contest which takes place on Thursday at 10 a.m. Duke’s quarterfinal match is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m.
