WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Wisconsin men’s tennis team (1-18, 0-6 B1G) lost to the Purdue Boilermakers (7-12, 2-4 B1G), 4-2, in its match Friday, Apr. 12 inside Schwartz Tennis Center.
Right out of the gate, Gabriel Huber/Michael Minasyan looked dominant as they matched up against Juan Velasquez/Soham Purohit at No. 1 doubles. The pair never trailed and finished up the match with a commanding 6-2 score. As the first match wrapped up, Collin Beduhn/Matthew Fullerton were involved in a close match at No. 3 doubles against Purdue’s Daniel Labrador/Mujtaba Ali-Khan. After trading sets back and forth for the majority of the match, it was Wisconsin who ran away with it in the end, winning 6-4. This marked the fifth time this season that the Badgers collected the doubles point and the second time in the last three matches.
Heading into singles, Huber, Zlatohlavek, and Hildebrandt all took the first set against the Boilermakers. Match No. 3 concluded first, with Fullerton falling to Villanger, 6-2, 6-1, and Hildebrandt was forced to retire midway through the second set. Huber followed up with a win against Purohit in straight sets at the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1 leaving just three matches remaining on the day, all of which headed into third sets. Singles No. 4 was the next to finish up, after Zlatohlavek lost the final two sets of his match, falling 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to Velasquez. The day was ended once Minasyan lost to Simeunovic, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 to give Purdue its fourth and final point. Beduhn’s match was left unfinished after he recovered from a 5-1 deficit in the tiebreak of the second set to force a third. He ended the match leading Labrador 5-1 in the third set.
