On the Court: No. 24 women's tennis travels to the ITA Kickoff Weekend

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 24 women’s tennis team is headed to the ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by the University of Virginia. The Badgers will face Georgia Tech on Friday, Jan. 26 at 3:00 p.m. and either No. 11 Virginia or Texas Tech on Jan. 27 at 3:30 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.

1. SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS:  Georgia Tech is coming off a tough4-0 loss to University of Central Florida last week, which caused the team to drop out of the weekly ITA Rankings.

Georgia Tech is home to No. 107 Carol Lee and No. 123 Kylie Bilchev. In the fall season, Lee tallied a 6-7 record, while Bilichev went 7-6 grabbing notable wins against Ohio State and Florida.

2. SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS AND LADY RAIDERS:  UW has the chance to play either No. 12 Virginia or Texas Tech in Saturday’s round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

No. 12 Virginia has yet to contest a match let alone a single set this season, boasting a 4-0 record. The roster has four ranked players who will use the home court advantage this weekend; No. 46 Hibah Shaikh, No. 82 Melodie Collard, No. 86 Annabelle XU, and No. 88 Sara Ziodato.

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are 1-0 on the campaign after defeating Liberty, 6-1 this past week. No. 69 Christina Tiglea competed in the No. 1 singles spot to take down her opponent in two sets. Texas Tech is also home to Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova, who together are ranked No. 5 on the ITA list for doubles. So far this spring season, the duo has yet to claim a win due to their last match going unfinished.

3. THE LAST SERVE: Wisconsin traveled south to DeKalb, Ill. to face James Madison and Northern Illinois in two dual matches on Jan. 20.

The team took down JMU, 6-1, with with Xinyu Cai and Alina Mukhortova upsetting No. 26 Cate Broerman and Hope Moulin at No. 1 doubles. The Badgers then had a clean 7-0 sweep of NIU dominating in all positions.
