CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Fighting Illini men’s tennis team will start its home campaign with a doubleheader on Saturday, playing Toledo at 11 a.m. CT and No. 10 Kentucky at 5 p.m. CT at Atkins Tennis Center.
Illini Finish Tournament Matches in Florida
The Illini finished their last tournament before dual play in Delray Beach, Florida, with five wins against the Florida Gators.
More matches were scheduled to be played, but they were rained out.
Tyler Bowers, Hunter Heck and William Mroz all picked up wins over the weekend — Bowers winning 6-3, 6-4; Heck winning 6-4, 6-2; and Mroz winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Mathis Debru also picked up a singles win, taking his match, 3-6, 3-2 ret. Bowers and freshman Jeremy Zhang picked up a doubles win with a 2-0, 15-15 ret. victory.
Viiala to Join Team in January
Illinois men’s tennis 2024 signee Zachary Viiala joined the team in January, starting at the Fighting Illini Invite.
Viiala has a career-high ITF ranking of 154 as well as a career-high ATP rank of 1397. He has won four singles and doubles titles, and his goal is “to play all the grand slams and to maximize my potential.”
